Elena Favilli in conversation with Sarah Shaffi

Elena Favilli, co-author with Francesca Cavallo of the international bestseller Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls, in conversation with Sarah Shaffi.

When Elena Favilli and Francesca Cavallo moved from Italy to California to found their children’s media company Timbuktu Labs, they were told ‘two girls alone’ could never raise money from Silicon Valley’s investors. Against all odds they launched their Kickstarter campaign for Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls (Storie della buonanotte per bambine ribelli) that became a stratospheric overnight success, breaking the record as the most highly funded original book in crowdfunding history.

The book went on to be a number one bestseller around the world, from Italy and the UK to France and Mexico.

Illustrated by sixty female artists from every corner of the globe, Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls has reinvented fairy tales, inspiring readers of all ages with the stories of 100 hundred remarkable women and their extraordinary lives, from Ada Lovelace to Malala, Elizabeth I to Serena Williams.

Elena Favilli has worked for Colors magazine, McSweeney's, RAI, Il Post, and La Repubblica, and has managed digital newsrooms globally. She is founder and CEO of Timbuktu Labs, which she created with her partner Francesca Cavallo. Elena was born in Montevarchi (Italy) and she lives in Venice, California. She holds a master's degree in semiotics from the University of Bologna (Italy) and she studied digital journalism at U.C. Berkeley.

Sarah Shaffi is a freelance journalist. She writes a regular column on books for Stylist Magazine's website, and is the co-founder of BAME in Publishing, a networking group for people of colour working in publishing. She is an advisor for MFest, a festival of Muslim literature, culture and ideas and a judge for the 2018 Myriad Editions' First Graphic Novel Competition.
