The Barbers of Sevilla

The Barbers of Sevilla

In 1816 Giovanni Paisiello – perhaps the most delicate and sensitive melodist of the Italian “opera buffa” in the second half of the XVIII century – died twice: some months before his last journey the relentless, martial rhythms and overflowing joy of Gioachino Rossini’s “Almaviva” – which would be staged as “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” only later on – stroke the Apulian composer’s fame dead, obscuring inexorably the polite humour and graceful musical designs of his “Barbiere” after more than thirty years of undisputed success from Petersburg to Lisbon, from Naples to London.
Thanks to a collaboration with the musicians of the City Lit Opera School, the Italian Cultural Institute is delighted to honour both these excellent Italian champions of comic opera by featuring a concert for which the two Figaros has sharpened the blades of their wit, to challenge one another once again.
