GAZZETTA AWARD UK FOR ETHICAL AND SPORTING VALUES

The first edition of the Gazzetta dello Sport –UK Award acknowledges the ethical and sporting achievements of an athlete in 2017.

The winner is Bournemouth striker Jermain Defoe. Defoe was a friend of Bradley Lowery, the young Sunderland fan who died of neuroblastoma on 7 July 2017, aged just 6. In the final months of his life, Defoe was little Bradley’s idol and the story of the close relationship that developed between the boy and the footballer not only touched the world but also inspired the creation of the Foundation dedicated to the memory of young Bradley.

Jermain showed the most admirable face of the football world and how you can be a football star without losing sight of the most serious issues in life. He also acted as a fine role model for other professionals by returning to the National team at the age of 35.

Also, a special award for highly respected Times journalist Henry Winter.
