La Giovane Scuola: Protagonists & Antagonists - Giordano: Chénier

THE SERIES

The Italian Cultural Institute in London is proud to feature a series of five musical episodes, to show the multifaceted complexity of the Italian operatic scene in the period comprising the last decades of the nineteenth century and the initial ones of the twentieth.
The first four events are focused on the most prominent representatives of the Giovane Scuola (Young School), to allow a deeper understanding of how these composers variously attempted to renew the narrative and musical language of Italian Romantic melodrama, without rejecting its sound basic pattern, which alternates theatrical dynamism and static lyricism.
The last event is aimed at giving an insight on a personality who brought this pattern into question consciously and radically not only by carrying out a rigorous meditation about the aesthetics and social role of theatre in the Classical Antiquity, but also by writing and composing his innovative operatic dramas in accordance with such a meditation.

SECOND EPISODE
UMBERTO GIORDANO: ANDREA CHÉNIER

Umberto Giordano is an Italian operatic maestro renowned all over the world. But – as it happens to many music authors – the audience relates his name only to few masterpieces.
“Andrea Chénier” is definitely among them. Indeed, this impressive operatic representation of a love story which unfolds during the dusk of the “Ancien Régime” and reaches its tragic end in the most fierce and bloody period of the “Grande Révolution”, is the work thanks to which Umberto Giordano was hailed as one of the heralds of the “Giovane Scuola” in the last years of the XIX century.
However, not only “Chénier” and “Fedora” would deserve a deeper interest by the public nowadays.
This is the reason why, on the sesquicentenary of Giordano’s birth, the Italian Cultural Institute draws the attention onto the whole range of his melodramas by featuring a sophisticated selection of scores from the masterpiece which opened the composer the way to an enduring worldwide success.
