Raphael – The Lord of the Arts (UK preview)

In the wake of the success of the first three films, Sky, the Vatican Museums and Nexo Digital, in collaboration with Magnitudo Film, present the fourth art film for cinema: “Raphael – The Lord of the Arts”, the first cinema transposition ever realized on Raffaello Sanzio (1483-1520), one of the world’s most famous artists. It has been recognized as a film of cultural interest by MiBACT – The Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Activities and Tourism.

The Italian Cultural Institute is delighted to host the preview in the United Kingdom. The screening will be introduced by art historian Ben Thomas (University of Kent) and it will anticipate the debut of the film across the country, on 23 may 2017.

“Raphael – the Lord of the Arts”, pursues a path already taken by the previous 3 films, but adds something new in emphasizing the cinematic perspective even more: it is an original and innovative dialogue between the art world and the world of cinema, a combination of expert commentary from famous, authoritative art historians, sophisticated historical reconstructions that guarantee intimate, emotional participation, and the most advanced filming techniques, to create an all-encompassing, engaging, visual experience.

Enlightening commentary from the experts takes us on a journey starting from Urbino (where Raphael was born), stopping off in Florence and continuing on to Rome and the Vatican, which represent both the peak of Raphael’s brilliant artistic career and its epilogue.

The artworks are over 70, of which more than 40 by Raphael, including the principal works of the artist kept in museums in Italy and abroad, among which the Marriage of the Virgin, the Madonna of the Goldfinch, the School of Athens, La Fornarina, La Velata, the Sistine Madonna, and the Transfiguration.

A wide deepening is dedicated to Raphael masterpieces kept in UK Museums “The Gavari Crucifixion” and “Portrait of Pope Julius II” at the National Gallery and “The Miraculous Draught of Fishes”, cartoon for a tapestry, at the Victoria and Albert Museum.

The impassioned, knowledgeable commentary is entrusted to three expert art historians: Antonio Paolucci (Director of Vatican Museums till 2016), Antonio Natali (Director of the Uffizi Gallery till 2015) and Vincenzo Farinella (Associate Professor of History of Modern Art at the Scuola Normale of Pisa and expert of Raphael).

In the cast of the historical reconstruction production we find Flavio Parenti (To Rome with Love, I Am Love) playing the part of Raphael, along with Enrico Lo Verso (The Stolen Children, Lamerica, Farinella voce regina, Les Miserables) in the role of Giovanni Santi, Angela Curri (The Mafia Kills Only in the Summertime) in that of the Fornarina, and Marco Cocci (Ovosodo) as Pietro Bembo.
