OH, FREEDOM

by Francesco D’Adamo, translated into Italian by Siân Williams
Event for children aged 9 upwards

Just what is freedom? And how to reach it when you have to leave the only world you’ve ever known? Ten year-old Tommy and his family decide to leave Alabama and the slave settlement where they live, in search of a better life. They set out to follow the Underground Railroad – a network of secret routes and safe houses – all the way to Canada, relying on good will and the skill of their guide, Peg Leg Joe, who uses songs as secret codes to help the fugitives find their way safely. Packed with fascinating historical detail, D’Adamo’s well-constructed novel asks questions that are all too pertinent today: How far would we go to help people fleeing their home in the hope of starting a better life?

Award-winning writer Francesco D’Adamo will give a talk (in Italian with English translation) and actor Samuel John will read extracts of the book (published in the UK by Darf) in English.

Francesco D’Adamo lives in Italy. His books have been widely translated. Two of his children’s novels, My Brother Johnny and Iqbal, published in the UK, have received much critical acclaim, winning him the New York Christopher Award for Adolescents and the cento Prize in Italy. In 2004 he also won the International Reading Association Teachers’ choices Booklist Prize. Oh, Freedom has just been awarded the Premio Asti D’Appello Junior.

Sian Williams has translated many Italian authors including Dacia Maraini. She is founder and director of the Children’s Bookshow, an annual national tour promoting literature for young people around the UK. She lives and works in London.
