Director-approved Screening of All the Colours of the Dark (1972)

-

Director-approved Screening of All the Colours of the Dark (1972) Cine-Excess VI is proud to screen this European cult masterpiece in the presence of its celebrated director: Sergio Martino. All the Colours of the Dark represents the pinnacle of Martino’s longstanding collaboration with iconic actress Edwige Fenech, as well as providing a further showcase for the talents of leading Italian screen-writer Ernesto Gastaldi. Here, Fenech provides a powerful performance as the neurotic Jane Harrison, who is plagued by primal memories of her mother’s violent demise, as well as the trauma of a recent miscarriage. When the figures from Harrison’s painful past begin to invade her fragile sense of contemporary reality, fact and fantasy begin to merge with macabre and perverse results. Boasting a cast of continental cult regulars that includes George Hilton, Ivan Rassimov and Susan Scott, All the Colours of the Dark also highlights Martino’s consummate skill as a cinema stylist, with themes of Freudian drama being captured by a range of fluid camera movements and vivid colour configurations. Originally released in the USA under titles that included They’re Coming to Get You and Day of the Maniac, the film was shorn of more than five minutes of footage which excised some of its most compelling and unsettling dream sequences. These excerpts have now been reinstated to represent the nightmarish vision originally intended by Martino and producer Mino Loy.
Sergio Martino has personally chosen this screening to accompany his visit to Cine-Excess VI. He will be introducing the film following an on-stage discussion about his life and career.

Screening courtesy of Sergio Martino and Mino Loy, with special thanks to Marc Morris. Open to cinema goers over the age of 18. Free to all Cine-Excess VI delegates holding a full or day rate pass.
