SEVENTH ITALIAN-BRITISH CONSTITUTIONAL CONVERSATION
THE REFERENDUM IN THE UNITED KINGDOM

The Devolution Club, a leading cultural association from Italy, turns now its attention to a British constitutional issue: the theory and practice of referendum in the United Kingdom. How far the theory and practice of direct democracy are coherent to the dogmatism of parliamentary sovereignty? Which connections can be outlined between referendums and devolution? Which are likely to be the consequences of a Scottish referendum on independence? Is direct democracy a device to resolve the crisis of representative politics? And, finally, which lessons can be taught to Italy by the British referendum experience, and to Britain by the Italian one? Italian and British scholars will meet in London and take part to a debate on one of the hottest topics in contemporary democracies
