Alberto Sughi

An exhibition of paintings

-

Alberto SughiAlberto Sughi is considered one of the major Italian living artists, the leading representative of the “existential realism”.
The exhibition includes paintings from 1958 to the most recent ones, covering the most important stages of his long and significant career. He has endeavoured to create an original language thanks to his unique ability to investigate the human being.

He started working in the early 1950s, choosing realism in the debate between abstract and figurative art in the immediate post-war period. Even from his early works, however, Sughi’s works have avoided any attempt at social moralising. They depict moments from daily life with no heroes – hence the definition of “existential realism” to describe his style. His paintings, numbering over one thousand, have been exhibited in all the most prestigious international contemporary art collections, at the International Biennale of Venice and at the Quadriennale in Rome, of which he was curator during the ‘90s.
Many Italian and foreign museums have devoted large retrospective exhibitions to his work.

This exhibition is organised by the Italian Cultural Institute and RomArtificio, produced with Associazione Amici dell'Arte and Società Beni Culturali and it is promoted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the kind and generous support of Regione Sicilia and Fondazione Banco di Sicilia.
